Buckshaw Broadband

Basic broadband services from any number of Internet Service Providers (ISP's) on Buckshaw is generaly quite poor, with most houses receiving speeds of less than 1mb.

The history behind this started 2 years ago when BVCA started conversations with BT Internet & Openreach to improve the cabelling and hence the broadband provision on Buckshaw. At that time BT had no plans to come to the village and with our persistency they have brought forward their plans. BT Internet have now agreed to upgrade two of the CAB’s on Buckshaw with the addition of 5 new CAB’s to provide Buckshaw with faster broadband – this will be happening Autumn 2012. The most recent update received by BT can be viewed here

In the meantime, two private companies offering broadband provision have come to Buckshaw; Boundless Communications & Sonic Internet.  Both companies have erected receivers around the village (mainly in the commercial areas and at the community centre/sports pitches) and are offering much improved speeds.

FAQ:

Are there any health implications from the masts being erected around the village?

The equipment in use is fully certified by Ofcom and EU to operate at safe levels. As such, each radio uses less power than most mobile phone handsets, which is why the radio’s only operate at relatively short range and in line of site. The regulations are extremely tight on the bands that can be used, as they have to be safe, and shared by other users. Power levels are limited to 63 milliwatts and all base station kit is installed at locations that nobody can get close to (the science bit is that intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance, so every double the distance=quarter the intensity). Where possible the power output is further reduced, so the kit operates well below guidelines most of the time.
