How To Join

There is currently 1 vacancy on the BVCA Committee; if you are interested to join the BVCA please contact bvca@buckshaw.org.

The only stipulation to join the BVCA Committee, is that you’re a Buckshaw resident. Full details can be found in the BVCA constitution here but explained below is a more informal account of what you’d be committing to:

Where would I fit in?

The BVCA focuses on two main areas – village issues and events.

Our proposed restructure means that the Operations Team look after village issues and this team is also responsible for communicating any/all updates to residents. If you were to join the Ops team you’d be involved in anything from website development, forum moderation, developing the fundraising of noticeboards/leafleting, press contacts, making residents aware of new commercial/community developments (i.e. railway, the hub, health centre), co-ordinating residents meetings, meeting with councils over boundary decisions, cycle path development, community growing projects, leaflet drop co-ordination etc etc.

In the Events Team you’d be involved in creation, planning and delivery of community events. In the past this has included xmas pantomimes, Halloween events, farmers markets, BVCA birthday events, pub quizzes etc and the outline for 2012 is bigger and better than anything we've done before!

It’s up to you whether you want to be involved in Ops or Events, or both! Just bear in mind that if you do wish to have significant input into both, your committing yourself to two lots of meetings, two lots of activities etc.

How much of my time will it take up?

  • Bi-monthly Full Committee meetings (where strategic BVCA decisions are made; the full committee is updated with Ops & Events activities; opportunity to brainstorm new ideas etc)
  • Events and/or Operations Team meetings approx every 6 weeks
  • To help out on event days if you’re available
  • To help out with leaflet drops as & when if you’re available (this involves leafleting a ‘zone’ which takes approx an hour)

What’s the next step?

As there is currently 1 vacancy on the BVCA Committee, any member of the Buckshaw community may be co-opted on to the Committee at anytime. Contact Chair, kaye.davies@buckshaw.org if you have any queries.

According to our Constitution, BVCA members have to be nominated & selected at a General Meeting (our next is Thurs 5th April); if you are a co-opted member you would stand to become a fully fledged member of the BVCA Committee at that meeting, as elected by Buckshaw residents. All members of the BVCA Committee are elected to represent their community, by their community.

In order to put yourself forward you’d need to complete and submit the nomination form along with 200 words for why you want to join the BVCA. The nomination form that is used ahead of a General Meeting, can be downloaded here. The reason we keep this part so formal, is because in the event that there are more nominations than there are places, your statement would be read aloud and BVCA members (i.e. all Buckshaw residents attending the meeting) would have to vote – this is the fairest way to do it. If you’re unable to attend the meeting we’ll read your statement aloud on your behalf. In the event that there are less nominations than there are spaces, then your nomination is uncontested and you’re a BVCA Committee member from that point forward!

I don’t want to be a fully fledged BVCA Committe member – what else can I do to get involved?

As part of the proposed changes to the BVCA, we are developing a ‘bank’ of event volunteers who help us get things done - and we're glad to say the list is growing! Event volunteers do as little or as much as they like – and are always appreciated!! There’s no formality to this level of involvement, just let us know that you want to be included as an event volunteer and we'll drop you an email ahead of our next activity!

If you have any questions/queries feel free to contact us here. If you would like to nominate yourself for the BVCA Committee please complete and return the BVCA Committee nomination form here
